Terrace or Hall of Entrance
Our beloved Minister of Community Life Rev. Rachel Bauman, has announced that she is bound for Madeline Island, WI to be the next minister of St. John’s United Church of Christ.
On Rachel’s last Sunday in worship on December 30, we will have a special After Party to celebrate and send her off.
For six years Rachel has been our preacher, teacher, pastoral counselor, spiritual director, cheerleader, and interim head-of-staff. We will miss so much about Rachel: her lovingkindness, her tender, and insightful wisdom, her poignant sermons and children’s times, generosity of spirit, creativity, organizational skills, abiding faith—too many gifts to be named here.
When a minister leaves our congregation, it is customary to invite members of the community to provide monetary recognition, called a “purse,” to express their gratitude. In order for this gift not to be taxable compensation for Rachel, but rather a gift from parishioners, contributions cannot run through the church’s books. Therefore, to facilitate the collection and presentation of the purse, Nick and Annis Kukulan have agreed to receive contributions. (Please remember that your gift will not qualify as a charitable contribution to the church when you prepare your personal tax return.) To contribute to the purse, make a check payable to Nick or Annis Kukulan and mail it to their home:

Please send your check as soon as possible, but know that Nick and Annis will accept contributions after December 30 and provide Rachel with a check for any additional money she receives. We also encourage you to write to Rachel and tell her what she means to you. You might share an anecdote about a way in which she helped you, reflect her gifts, include a prayer or blessing toward the future, or share a poem that is meaningful to you.
And finally, Carolyn Ash is putting together a photo book to give to Rachel on her last Sunday. She invites you to send her photos of Rachel with captions by December 16 at firstname.lastname@example.org. Captions can describe the photo, list the people in it, or be a sentence of thanks, a prayer or a poem.
