The Church Council has called an official congregational meeting for Sunday, December 16, 2018, immediately following worship to vote on calling Phil Porter to his current position as Minister of Art & Communication as an ordained minister (pending approval by the Bay Association). This is a step on his path toward ordination and the Council unanimously recommends approval of this call.
Phil has held Commissioned Minister status for 20 years. Recent changes in the ordination process in the United Church of Christ have opened up the possibility of him being ordained. Since the summer, Phil has been taking steps in that direction. Committee A of the Northern California Nevada Conference, which oversees the ordination process, recently approved Phil for an Ecclesiastical Council, which will be held on Saturday, March 2 in Loper Chapel. That body, which is a gathering of members of churches in the Bay Association of the Conference, will vote on whether to approve Phil for ordination. If the result is positive, an ordination would follow sometime before he retires from the position at church.
At First Church, Phil has met with and been approved by the Covenant & Discernment Committee, the Ministry of Worship & Spiritual Life and Church Council as he seeks to be called to his current position as an ordained minister.
