First Church artist-in-residence and member Jeff Becker shares his life journey through poetry and song in a performance called "The Journey So Far" on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 8 pm in the Sanctuary!
This concert benefits East Bay Sanctuary Covenant and Resonance @ First Church Berkeley's annual family concert. It will feature guest artists Leonard Ash, Michael Barbarino, Walter Bishop, Igor Chudak, Jonathan Julian, Donald Martin, Joe Rosenmayer, Trente Morant, Chris Petallano, Dave Woemmel and Stephanie Lynne Smith.
His music ranges from the silly to the sublime with relatable and poignant lyrics set to pleasing melodies that may catch the listener unaware as they tug at your heart.
Jeff began his musical journey in a small Pennsylvania town on the Mason-Dixon line. The arts were a constant throughout childhood and adolescence and his first composition—his own poem set to music can be traced back to an eighth grade music class. In the 90s, Jeff began writing poetry more formally as a way of coping with the loss of many friends during the height of the AIDS crisis. Several of these poems were published in anthologies. In 2010, Jeff found his way back to music in 2010. He has sung with various music groups and continues to sing with the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus and its small a cappella ensemble, HomoPhonics.
Tickets are $25 and $20 for students and seniors. Sliding scale tickets are available at the door. Purchase tickets online here...
About the beneficiaries:
Resonance @ First Church Berkeley
Now entering its fifth season, Resonance at First Church Berkeley highlights the skills of diverse artists from the Bay Area and beyond. Our family concerts are fun, short programs designed to introduce children to quality music performed by professional musicians. This year's program, for example, will combine a "Blessing of the Animals" with a free performance of Camille Saint-Saens's “Carnival of the Animals.”
East Bay Sanctuary Covenant
East Bay Sanctuary Covenant offers sanctuary, solidarity, support, community development, advocacy, and legal services to those escaping wars, terror, political persecution, gender abuse, exploitation, and other expressions of violence. It joins with others to eliminate the causes of violence worldwide.
