First Church Berkeley, United Church of Christ, took part in the National Preach-In on Climate Change organized by Interfaith Power & Light on Sunday, February 16, 2014. Across the country faith communities addressed the pressing issue of climate change.

Senior Minister Patricia de Jong preached at 9 am casual service and First Church scientist and theologian Rev. Robert Russell preached in the classic service at 11 am. Russell is the Director of the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences at the Graduate Theological Union.

The Green Ministry Team presented a Learning Hour at 10 am in the Large Assembly on Climate Change with the screening of (most of) the documentary film, Chasing Ice.

Chasing Ice is the story of one man?s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In the spring of 2005, acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on assignment for National Geographic to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth?s changing climate.

Sparked by what he saw, within months of that first trip Balog and a band of young adventurers began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world?s changing glaciers. The resulting videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Learn more at:
