NOTE: July 7 • This event has been cancelled.

On Saturday, July 8, 9 am–1 pm in Loper Chapel, Adult Education invites you to attend a Non-Violent Communication (NVC) training, presented by Roxy Manning, executive director of BayNVC.

Divisive comments and abhorrent behavior against people of color, immigrants, Jews, Muslims and LGBTQI communities have been increasing in the US. How can we respond to the growing divide? How shall we respond to these behaviors when we encounter them, whether they are directed at us or towards others? In this NVC training, attendees will learn how NVC can address this problem, learn the main concepts of NVC and have opportunities to practice NVC with real life examples.

NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies—whether verbal or physical—are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same basic human needs, and that each of our actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs. People who practice NVC have found greater authenticity in their communication, increased understanding and deepening connection.

The workshop is for high school-age and older. Due to mature subject matter, middle school youth entering the sixth grade or higher in the fall may attend with parental consent. Child care will be available. Refreshments will be served.
