For All-Ages Worship on Sun., June 2, we will worship with our whole bodies in service to our church and wider community on Service as Worship Sunday!
From 10-10:20 am, we will gather in worship together as usual. At 10:20 am, everyone who attends worship that day will choose from one or more service projects around campus and work until 11:20 am, when we will gather back on the Terrace for the Afterparty. (Those who have difficulty moving around may choose to stay in the Sanctuary in prayerfulness, while recorded music plays over the speakers.) Ministry meetings will meet as usual from 11:45 am-1 pm.
Here is a sampling of service projects:
Postcard advocacy for area antipoverty agencies
Making gift bags for unhoused neighbors
Making art and love notes for newcomers to church, unhoused neighbors and others
Litter pickup and weeding on our campus and at Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay across the street
Quiltmaking for local agencies (bring your sewing machine!)
Painting a local shelter
Note: for those who like to paint and want to come early, we need 10 people to finish painting the lobby of antipoverty agency Berkeley Food & Housing Project, four blocks from campus.
This project will run from 9 am-noon (possibly ending early). If you would like to be part of the painting team, please email Molly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also on campus that day: a model tiny house built for Youth Spirit Artworks’ (YSA) proposed Tiny House Village, that will house homeless youth ages 18-25. YSA has invited faith communities to sign on to fund and build 12 more tiny houses later this summer. Congregation Beth El and the UU Church of Berkeley have already signed on as lead congregations. Come tour the tiny house in our parking lot, meet some of the youth leaders of YSA to talk about their lives and their work, and consider at what level First Church would like to be involved.
