On Saturday, June 9, a vigil was held at the West County Detention Center. The First Church Accompaniment Team has been supporting a family that includes Raul who is in detention, his wife Dianeth and daughter Alexa.
Alexa is approaching the age of 15 when, typically, a young girl would celebrate her quinceañera, a coming of age celebration. Because her father might not be released by her August birthday, Alexa chose to dance a special dance in her quinceañera dress at the vigil. She danced with her cousin and mother. Alexa’s family made 200 tamales to share with others at the vigil.
Many First Church members pitched in to cover the cost of the dress and more than 20 attended the vigil.
Dianeth and Alexa shared their story during the First Church Sunday worship service on June 3 (beginning at 12 minutes).
