Christmas Gifts for the Unhoused or Newly Housed

Tue, Nov 20, 2018

This Christmas we have two opportunities to make a small but powerful difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, or moving from homelessness into permanent supportive housing.

As we have done for the past two years, we will hand out stockings stuffed with items that provide relief or joy to unhoused folks after our 6 pm Christmas Eve in the Cloisters outdoor service. For the stockings, here is an online sign up sheet to claim the item(s) you will provide to fill stockings.

And new this year: we are collecting kits for those just entering permanent, supportive housing after living in a shelter or on the street. On Sundays November 25 and December 2, you can pick up a new laundry basket in the Hall of Entrance along with a list of items most needed for someone setting up house. Return the basket filled with those items between December 9 and 16. We will bless the baskets on Sunday December 16, and bring them to the Berkeley Food & Housing Project for distribution as the need arises. Here is the list of items to fill the baskets. You may also make a donation online through Realm (click on the box that says "Sustaining Gift" and you'll see a drop down menu where you can choose "Welcome Home Baskets") and members of the Affordable Housing Aficionados will purchase items.

No one should be without a roof over their head, and the dignity and privacy of a home. But while there are unhoused siblings on our streets, it's a blessing to be able to make their lives a little easier.
