Members of the First Church have formed a new Disability Empowerment Team. One of its goals is to generate sensitivity around language of disability. One such opportunity arises in conversations as a community around parking and access issues. The Team invites the community to use the current terminology of “Disability” instead of outdated terms like “Handicapped” and “cripple.”
While the phrase “Handicapped Parking” may still be used by some municipalities, they encourage the phrase “Disabled Parking” or “Disabled Person’s Parking” or “Parking for People with Disabilities.”
Current members of the Team are Tom Buckey, Drew Sperling, Helen Walsh and Kit Novotny. If you are interested in being involved in the team, contact Kit Novotny or any of the other members of the team.
