First Church Endorses Affordable Housing Propositions

Sun, Sep 30, 2018

On Sunday, September 30, 2018, the First Church congregation voted unanimously to recommend the endorsement of two California ballot issues related to affordable housing and homelessness.

Prop 1, The Veterans and Affordable Housing Act, would authorize a $4 billion bond measure to support affordable housing projects and housing for veterans. Projects include loans, transit-related housing, home purchase assistance and farmworker housing along with support specifically earmarked for the CalVet Home Loan Program. Prop 2, would provide $2 billion for supportive housing for people with mental health challenges. The proposition would redirect funds collected from a tax surcharge on millionaires that already exists. It is also called the Use Millionaire's Tax Revenue for Homelessness Prevention Housing Bonds Measure. Download a Prop 2 Fact Sheet...

The First Church community has named affordable housing as an issue of particular concern for a number of years and that concern is shared widely in the state. Providing housing support is also a crucial health issue for many people.

First Church took a similar action recently by endorsing an Alameda County housing initiative in a recent election. To endorse a proposition does not conflict with the church’s non-profit status.
