On Sunday, October 2, 2016 a large crowd gathered at First Presbyterian Church at 2 pm in the afternoon for First Church worship. Senior Minister Molly Baskette preached a sermon entitled “A House Not Made with Hands" based on a passage from 2 Corinthians 5:1—“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.”
She reflected on the fire that has displaced the church, acknowledging both the pain and the possibility in that. The children sang the Gloria, the Sanctuary Choir and the 9 am musicians performed, communion was shared and a period of time was taken to answer questions from the congregation about that fire. We were able to use our own communion ware, retrieved from the Deacon's closet in the First Church Sanctuary (which was not affected by the fire.)
Afterward the community gathered for food, conversation and consolation.
We were actually able to cobble together a webcast the service and have published a rough video of the whole service. We will be working on a version of the service with better audio quality if possible. The current version is here...
We will also be working this week to set up a better system for capturing the service.
