After a robust discussion, Church Council voted unanimously at its last meeting to install a three-dimensional sign with back-lit aluminum block letters mounted on the brick area above the Cloister. Clearly stating “who we are” around the campus will make our space more inviting and help us grow our faith family. The sign will read “First Church” in large type followed by “First Congregational Church of Berkeley • UCC” below.
The Ministry of Stewardship, Finance & Administration (SFA) has shepherded this design process with input from staff. SF&A also displayed three versions of the sign on the outside wall, then collected feedback through an informal poll. While there was overwhelming excitement about the sign’s design and location, many expressed support for including the word “congregational” in large type as well. Council decided that their choice would maximize the size of the letters in the sign, creating greater visibility from a distance, while also including the full name of the church. The sign will be installed later this year.
The Council members who voted in that meeting were: Kara Korbel-Chinula (Moderator), Leonard Ash (Moderator-Elect), Janet McDonald, Emma Fujii, Becky Smith, Bree Elle Gardner, Judy Huston, Rachel Sing, Nathan Hood (SF&A Chair), and Alan Miller.
