Beginning with the excitement of Palm Sunday through the shadow of Good Friday and on to the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, First Church will mark the important events of Holy Week with a whole range of services and activities.
On Palm Sunday, April 14, we will create a raucous parade with the giant Jesus and donkey puppets, palms, drums, “hosannas” and a dramatic retelling of Jesus’ crowd-inspiring entry into Jerusalem. Gather outside the Sanctuary at 9:35 am to begin. Worship begins at 10 am.
This year, we will celebrate Maundy Thursday House Church, April 18, in homes around the community. We will share a simple, delicious meal and the humbling ritual of hand- and foot-washing as “house church.” Watch for sign-up opportunities soon.
On Good Friday, April 19 at 7 pm, we commemorate the day that Jesus hung on the cross with a service shared by seven UCC churches in the Sanctuary. Also the Sanctuary will be open all day from 7 am to 5:30 pm for contemplation and prayer. A brief time of chant, scripture and prayer will take place at the top of each hour.
On Holy Saturday, April 20 at 7 pm, we'll have the first ever Jesus Christ Super-Sing-Along in the First Church Sanctuary inspired by Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell and other music.
On Easter Sunday, April 21, we celebrate with two services. Early risers will greet the dawn with an Easter Sunday Sunrise Service at 6 am in the parking lot of the Lawrence Berkeley Hall of Science. We will watch the Bay Area transition from darkness to early morning light. (If it rains, gather in Loper Chapel.)
At 9:45 am, special music will begin in the Sanctuary and at 10 am, the Easter Sunday Festival Worship will begin. We’ll celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the continual renewal of our joy in the midst of death-dealing with worship in the Sanctuary. Rev. Molly will preach. Gather afterwards for Easter treats and a Easter Egg Hunt on the front lawn for the kids.
