Sermon: UCC Climate Activist Jim Antal

The Rev. Dr. James Antal was the guest preacher at First Church on Sunday, September 16, 2018. His sermon was entitled “Defiant Hope: Our Faithful Response to the Climate Crisis." He shares stories of defiant hope in the resistance to fossil fuels wand calls us to envision new possibilities as if they are inevitable.

Jim is the former Conference Minister for the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church and provides national leadership as a climate activist for the denomination. He played a key role in the denomination’s decision to divest from fossil fuel investments which was approved at the UCC General Synod in 2013.

He is the author of Climate Church, Climate World and has been speaking widely about climate issues from a faith perspective as well as a political one. The book explores the details of the current climate crisis and our lack of response and is also a clarion call on people of faith to be the solution. He is involved in a variety of activities promoting climate issues and has twice been arrested protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline outside the White House.
