“For Thine is the KIN-dom!”

Thu, Nov 15, 2018

Some of you may have noticed in Sunday’s bulletin the use of kin-dom in the Lord’s Prayer. First Church has a long and proud tradition of inclusivity, reflecting gender neutrality in prayers, sermons, and song lyrics. One challenging word is “Kingdom.” Try googling this. There are synonyms but nothing quite fits!

At the recent meeting of the Ministry of Worship & Spiritual Life, it was suggested that a fitting alternative would be “kin-dom.” The use of this “word” removes the allusion to gender and replaces it with a reminder that we are all members of the family of God. This wording has been used by several different denominations in a variety of settings over the years.

After a brief discussion, the ministry members voted unanimously to have this reflected in the weekly order of worship and on the overhead screens.

Another proud First Church tradition is that all things of this nature are optional! Words matter. This is simply an option being offered. The Ministry of Worship & Spiritual Life and First Church staff honor what best portrays your God.
