Advent Retreat


The Advent Retreat will be offered on Saturday, December 9 from 9:30 am–3:30 pm in Loper Chapel.

The retreat will explore the Advent theme “Watch.”

Kit Novotny will lead gentle yoga and meditation in the Sanctuary Time will be made for journaling, poetry and free time, lunch, small group conversation and a closing ritual of lessons and carols. Rachel Bauman will also lead.

New College Group Gathering


Young Adult Minister Kit Novotny is calling together a new group of college/college-aged adults. Come together at Saturn Cafe (delish vegetarian diner food on Oxford and Allston) on Thursday November 9, at 6 pm (’til 7:30/8 pm or so). 

Let Kit know if you're planning to come (; 508-498-1037). If you'd like to join this new group for college/college-aged young adults, let Kit know! We will try to vary the meeting day to work for various schedules.

First Church Test Kitchen Potluck


Take part in the First Church Test Kitchen Potluck on Sunday, November 12. You are invited to bring a dish from your kitchen that you have never cooked before but have always wanted to try, and to test it out on your church family during the After Party!

This will be an excellent opportunity to kick off the holiday season and set your kitchens abuzz by dusting off some cookbooks or the interwebs and discovering something new.

Practices for Opening the Heart


Come to the Learning Hour on Sunday, October 15 on Buddhist Practices for Opening the Heart, presented by First Church member Bill Coffin, at 11:45 am in Loper Chapel.

Learn about different Buddhist practices, some of which may be familiar to Christians, as well. Bill started meditating in 1987 and has been teaching meditation since 2006. He has often taught about the transformative practice of metta — usually translated as “loving- kindness.”

Blessing of the Animals 2017


This year's Blessing of the Animals will take place Sunday evening Oct 15, from 4:30–5:30 pm. Dogs, lizards, birds, teddy bears, turtles and other beloved pets are welcome (dogs on leashes and critters in carriers, please!) The event will take place outside in the Courtyard. In case of rain, it will be in Loper Chapel.

Everyone, regardless of pet ownership, is invited to join in the fun of celebrating all God's creatures. You may also bring a photo of a beloved animal who has passed away or wouldn't do well in such a gathering.

Public Theologian Marvin K. White to Preach


Marvin K. White will preach his first sermon as First Church’s Public Theologian in Residence on Sunday, October 1 during the 10 am worship service. This follows his first "workship" that was held after church on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Marvin has preached several times previously and is serving in this special role through 2017-2018. Including this first opportunity, he will do four pairs of leading a workship on one Sunday and then preaching the next.

Summer Soul Saturday


Please join Kit Novotny and summer intern Pauline Van Backle on Saturday, August 5 for Summer Soul Saturday, a mini-retreat to rejuvenate your heart, body, mind and soul.

They will lead a guided meditation and yoga session, which will be followed by a catered lunch and will conclude with prayerful spiritual practices. Kit and Pauline look forward to hosting and holding this sacred space to reflect and elevate the collective spiritual wellbeing.

Open Chapel Open Planning Potluck


Young adults are invited to come to an Open Chapel Open Planning Potluck on Wednsday, July 19, 7–9 pm in Loper Chapel!

Let’s get together and share some feedback on the first two seasons of Open Chapel, stay connected and do some big picture theme brainstorming for the 2017- 2018 season. Plus, potluck deliciousness! All are welcome, even if you’ve never been to Open Chapel.
