Sermon

Besides being the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, this year is also the 50th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia that struck down the remaining laws in 16 states prohibiting interracial marriage. Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested in their home state of Virginia when their marriage certificate from Washington, D.C. was not honored. The sermon text tells us that “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love.” When we center our laws and institutions on fear, we create injustice. When we put love in the center we create freedom and justice.
